Communicating with the LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 Brick using MATLAB

Today, geoinformatics master student Jonas Räsch and I started to design the first MATLAB/LEGO MINDSTORMS exercises for our MATLAB/LEGO MINDSTORMS Environmental Remote Sensing Lab.

Exercise #1 is intended to help students to understand how to communicate with the LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 brick using MATLAB. The participants of the lab will download and install the LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3 software and the LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 hardware support from MATLAB. Next they will establish a USB, WiFi and Bluetooth connection between the computer and the EV3 brick. Then they will display ‘Hello World!’ on the display, play a tone with frequency 800 Hz and duration of 500 ms and change the color of the status light of the EV3 brick to an orange color.
